This International Workers’ Day, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) reaffirms its commitment to a higher education sector that is fair, inclusive and dignified for all who work and study within it.
Inclusivity Means Accessibility
Accessibility in higher education must be strengthened, not only for students, but within the workplace itself. Staff with disabilities continue to face barriers to full participation from inadequate infrastructure to limited institutional support. Advancing accessibility means creating enabling environments, reasonable accommodation and inclusive policies that ensure all workers can thrive equally.
Outsourcing Remains a Stain
The persistence of outsourcing across higher education institutions remains a serious concern. Despite commitments to insourcing, following widespread protests, many universities continue to rely on outsourced labour for essential services. This undermines job security, entrenches inequality and weakens accountability. Workers who clean, secure and maintain campuses are integral to the academic project and deserve fair wages, stable employment and full recognition.
The Future You Choose Today
At the same time the current higher education landscape poses growing challenges for younger workers. Gen Z academics and support staff are entering a sector marked by short-term contracts, limited career progression and increasing reports of workplace harassment. Organized labour remains the most effective way to address these conditions. NTEU calls on young workers to join unions, strengthen collective power and shape a more secure and just future.
Our Purpose
This Workers’ Day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact of collective struggle. The role of unions is to secure stronger frameworks against workplace discrimination and harassment, help push institutions toward clearer policies and reporting mechanisms and insuring accountability measures. NTEU remains committed to advancing these and a higher education system that works for all.
