NTEU CALLS FOR MANANA’S HEAD

NTEU is sickened by the incident with Deputy Minister Manana.

Whether in July or in August this kind of behaviour cannot be overlooked.  We do not care which month this occurred in, it is disgusting and unacceptable!

South Africa has a history of oppression and violence against women in particular, and progressive actions taken to correct this are rendered useless when this kind of behaviour is sanctioned by high profile individuals such as the Deputy Minister.

As a cabinet member, responsible for higher education, it is expected that he sets an example for young men coming through our universities. The example he has set over this weekend is nothing short of deplorable.

It is our view that Manana must resign or be fired, and as is the case with any alleged assault the authorities must investigate and make arrests. The law must be allowed to take its course without fear or favour.

NTEU is a politically non-aligned trade union organizing exclusively in the Higher Education sector.
